Record season predicted in the Swedish mountains

During Christmas, New Year and certain sports holiday weeks, the major ski resorts are already almost fully booked, according to the destination companies.

 – It is a better booking situation than in previous years and this may be because the Alps will not be open in the way we are used to. The booking situation is generally fully booked, says Anna Hansson, CEO of the destination company in Vemdalen, to Ekot.

Jämtland is the county in the country that receives the most ski tourists. The largest are Åre, the Vemdal area and Funäsfjällen in western Härjdalen with nearly 100,000 guest beds in total. The pressure for bookings is much greater than usual this early in the autumn.

– During the New Year, there are only a few accommodations left in Funäsfjällen and this also applies to the sports holidays, especially weeks nine and eight, says Funäsfjällen's destination manager Mats Lennartson.

The situation is the same in Åre, says the destination company's CEO Therese Sjölundh.
Åre is also known for its nightlife and several confirmed cases of corona infection in March were linked to après-ski in Åre. According to Therese Sjölundh, it is currently unclear whether or how nightclubs can remain open.

– It will look very different this winter. We will get a lot of questions about that and we will have to communicate what will apply, she says.

Even in Sälenfjällen, with a total of around 55,000 beds, booking pressure is high.

– If the corona situation does not worsen, it looks like it will be a record winter, says Johan Thorn, CEO of Stöten.

The fact that so much is already booked also means that mountain tourists may be forced to rethink their choice of weeks.

– If you want to experience snow this winter, you have to think again and maybe take weeks off other than the most popular ones. For example, January-March, that's when you might be able to find really good accommodation, says Mats Lennartson.
