Spain is lifting a ban on direct flights and ships from Italy that was imposed on March 11 to stop the spread of the coronavirus. However, other restrictions and a two-week quarantine for people arriving from abroad will remain in place.
The easing comes after the death toll reported due to Covid-19 has decreased significantly, but a recovery in the country's economy is not expected until the end of June, when tourism may gain some momentum.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expected to ask parliament to extend the previously declared state of emergency until June 27. It has so far helped to limit the spread of the infection but has also had a significant impact on the country's economy. The issue of the state of emergency is expected to be discussed on Tuesday.
At the height of the outbreak in Spain, hundreds of people died every day. On Monday, the country reported 59 deaths in the past 24 hours, the lowest number in two months.
