Climate change is making its mark in Mexico – in the form of smelly seaweed. Up to 9,000 tons of seaweed a day wash up along the Caribbean coast, where popular tourist destinations like Cancun are located, the New York Times reports. Sargassum, a type of floating macroalgae that emits a rotten egg odor when it breaks down, can threaten the health of those working to clean up and drive tourists indoors.
Last week, the country's President Claudia Sheinbaum allocated over one billion kronor to clean up the coast.
“The effort so far has been enormous, but we need to do more to prevent sargassum from reaching the beaches,” Sheinbaum told NEW.
