During January, Swedavia's ten airports had almost 2.1 million passengers, which is on par with the number of passengers during January last year.
Stronger demand for international travel, especially Europe, and weaker demand for domestic travel continues in January, which is seasonally one of the weakest travel months of the year. Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Gothenburg Landvetter Airport had the highest growth along with Kiruna Airport among the regional airports.
-Demand for air travel was stable in January, despite uncertainties such as the global situation, the economy and private finances. International travel continues to increase during the month, which primarily benefits our major airports but also Luleå Airport. Domestic travel, on the other hand, continues to develop weakly. There are great uncertainties, but we expect increased travel and a larger selection of routes at our airports later in the spring and during the summer. At the same time, there are signs that the economic situation will brighten somewhat in the future, which will also likely benefit demand for air travel, says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia's President and CEO.
During January, nearly 2.1 million passengers traveled through Swedavia's ten airports, compared to just over 2.1 million passengers in January last year. International travel increased by 2 percent to just over 1.5 million passengers, while domestic travel decreased by 7 percent to nearly 600,000 passengers. Overall travel at Swedavia's airports during the month of January is approximately 74 percent of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
Stockholm Arlanda Airport had just over 1.4 million passengers in January, which is an increase of 1 percent compared to January last year. International travel increased by 2 percent to almost 1.2 million passengers, while domestic travel decreased by 9 percent to just over 200,000 passengers. Overall, passenger levels at Arlanda in January are close to 80 percent of pre-pandemic levels, 2019.
Gothenburg Landvetter Airport had just over 300,000 travelers in January, an increase of 3 percent compared to January 2023. International travel increased by 6 percent to nearly 300,000 travelers, while domestic travel decreased by 16 percent to nearly 40,000 travelers. Traveler levels at Gothenburg Landvetter in January are at 74 percent of pre-pandemic levels.
Other Swedavia airports had a varying development during the first month of the year. Kiruna Airport is the regional airport with the best recovery both in January and compared to before the pandemic, with nearly 23,000 passengers. Visby Airport followed by Luleå Airport had the best passenger development after Kiruna Airport in January compared to January last year. Malmö Airport and Åre Östersund Airport had the weakest development in January compared to January last year.
