A new survey from travel agency Ticket shows that a clear majority of Swedes prefer sandy beaches to pebbles when it's time for a beach holiday. Ticket lists five European beaches that combine soft sand with good sun exposure – perfect for a spontaneous last-minute trip.
When Swedes are given the choice between laying their towel on sand or rocks, the answer is clear – a full 69 percent prefer sandy beaches. This is shown by the latest survey of Swedes' holiday preferences by travel agency Ticket. Although rocky beaches are often associated with clear water, it is the comfortable feeling of warm, soft sand between your toes that wins in the long run.
– For many, beach life is the very symbol of relaxation. Being able to walk barefoot without shoes or lie comfortably on a blanket makes sandy beaches more relaxing. This is also noticeable in bookings, where destinations with fine sandy beaches are often in high demand, especially during late summer, says Louise Hellgren, Product Manager at Ticket.
As the high season draws to a close, it's still sunny and swimming-friendly across Europe. The combination of fewer tourists, warmer seas and cooler evenings makes late summer an optimal time for a beach holiday – and it's also possible to find affordable options at short notice.
Here are five of Europe's best sandy beaches for a late summer trip:
- Cala Agulla, Mallorca
- Elafonisi, Crete
- La Pelosa, Sardinia
- Marinha Beach, Portugal
- Fig Tree Bay, Cyprus
