The travel industry is the worst hit by the corona pandemic

The layoff rate in the travel industry is 83 percent, according to figures from the Swedish Travel Agency and Tour Operator Association, SRF.
– In addition, just over a third of employees in travel agencies and tour operators have been laid off or given notice, says Didrik von Seth, Secretary General of SRF in a press release.

Attractions around the world are empty and many resorts that rely on tourism have been hit hard.

In Sweden, three industries stand out, according to the industry association SRF's survey: Travel agencies and tour operators, hotels and restaurants, and advertising and marketing agencies.

– Hotels and restaurants have half the proportion of laid-offs compared to our industry, says SRF's Secretary General Didrik von Seth.

Far more than average

The average number of laid-offs in Sweden is 12 percent. In the travel industry, the layoff rate is 83 percent, in hotels and restaurants 42 percent, according to SRF's survey and figures from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth.

Now there are fears that Sweden will lose thousands of jobs.

– Before midsummer, the government announced that any measures to resolve the travel industry's urgent situation were not currently relevant. This risks jobs moving, not only to our neighboring countries, but also to other places in the world, says Didrik von Seth.
