The tourist alert from Mallorca

Remove

There has been a sharp decline in the number of tourists on the holiday island of Mallorca recently. Protests against tourism are being blamed as the main reason. Now, drastic measures are being proposed to "save the season".

The summer on the Spanish holiday islands has been marked by major anti-tourist protests. Now restaurant and bar owners are reporting on Majorca about sharply reduced revenues.

According to the CAEB business association, which represents entrepreneurs in the Spanish Balearic Islands, results have been falling since May. Figures from July show that beach bars, parasol rentals and water sports activities saw a drop in revenue of around 20 percent compared to the same period last year. In August, hotels were less full than normal.

”Main reason for the decline”

Adopuma, the association that brings together landlords and service providers along the coast of Mallorca, is now sounding the alarm about the situation on the island.

“Irresponsible negative messages against tourism are the main reason for the decline,” Adopuma president Onofre Fornes told Daily Mail.

He said that anti-tourist groups are pushing the island's economy "to the breaking point." Now, drastic measures are being proposed to "save the season.".

Adopuma calls on the authorities to, among other things, introduce a price cap and "crack down on anti-tourism attitudes" to ensure that Mallorca remains an attractive destination for tourists.
