Vietnam plans to reopen the resort island of Phu Quoc to foreign visitors who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in November. The country's borders have been closed to international visitors since early last year, but is now preparing to restart its vital tourism industry.
Previously, it was planned to reopen Phu Quoc in October, but those plans were scrapped due to the population's low vaccination rate.
White beaches, crystal clear waters and lush jungle attracted around 670,000 visitors to Phu Quoc in 2019. Vietnamese authorities have hoped that the island will become a tourist mecca like Phuket in Thailand or Bali in Indonesia.
From November 20, special flights carrying international visitors with vaccination passports will be welcomed to the island. After that – between the end of December and the end of March – the aim is to welcome up to 5,000 foreign tourists on similar flights.
