Tui has reached a solution with aircraft manufacturer Boeing regarding the problematic 737 Max model, of which the travel operator has ordered 61 copies, according to a press release.

German Tui, which also operates from Nordic airports, has already received 15 of the 61 planes delivered, planes that have been on the ground since the crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia in 2018 and 2019.

Tui is withdrawing half of the order, which also means that the downsizing of the aircraft fleet can be done smoothly, according to the company.

Tui incurred costs of 293 million euros last year. This amount will now be ”largely” paid by Boeing, according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, but exactly how much is being kept secret.

For Boeing, the agreement with Tui is just one in a series surrounding the 737 Max. The manufacturer has previously entered into significantly larger compensation agreements with a number of major customers.

In December, an agreement was reached with the US low-cost airline Southwest Airlines, the company that had the largest fleet of 737 Max aircraft. In January, an agreement with American Airlines followed. In both cases, no financial details were disclosed.

Another player with large orders for the 737 Max is Norwegian. Compared to Turkish Airlines reaching a compensation agreement of $224 million, according to the Hurriyet newspaper, Boeing is indicating a compensation of around $335 million to Norwegian based on the number of orders and already purchased 737 Max planes that have been grounded.

Boeing booked $8.3 billion in flight compensation costs in its latest quarterly report. The costs don't stop there, however, as the global flight ban has also caused other costs in the form of production shutdowns and recertification. So far, Boeing has detailed the total bill at close to $20 billion.
