Every year, travel magazine Vagabond releases a list of the most interesting travel destinations for the coming year. This year, they have chosen to highlight places that are a bit hidden away, rather than the most popular tourist attractions.
The reason is spelled overtourism, which has been on the agenda several times over the past year. In Amsterdam, Barcelona, Palma and many other places there have been loud protests against tourism during the year.
– It seems as if in some places we have reached a peak tourism, when the money that tourism brings in does not outweigh the negative effects created in its wake, says Fredrik Brändström, editor-in-chief at Vagabond.
To create more sustainable tourism, regulations are needed. But as a tourist, you can also take a hit. Where and when we go, how we get there, and how we behave while traveling also play a role.
– Overtourism is not fun for anyone. Not for those who live in the area, not for the tourists who have to squeeze into crowded alleys or eat at restaurants that charge excessive prices, Fredrik continues.
In the list of best travel destinations for 2025, Vagabond highlights, among other things, the Spanish city of Santander as an alternative to Barcelona, Bristol instead of London, and the city of Brno instead of Prague. Far from unknown or undiscovered - but still places that are not among the most common when we Swedes choose holiday destinations.
– Mass tourism is often concentrated in a few places where a lot of people go. At the same time, there are many cities and regions that are just happy to have more visitors. We would like to recommend places that are a little off the beaten tourist track, which is why we have produced this alternative list compiled by some of Sweden's leading travel writers, concludes Fredrik.
Other destinations that make this year's list are: Albania (instead of Greece), Favignana (instead of Sardinia), Seattle (instead of New York), Marseille (instead of Paris) and Bornholm (instead of Gotland & Öland).
