The Eiffel Tower, one of the world's largest tourist destinations, was closed on Wednesday due to staff strikes, the company that operates the tower announced.

The strike, held on the 100th anniversary of the death of engineer Gustave Eiffel, was called in protest against the management of the tower, which is owned by the city of Paris but managed by the Sete company (Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel).

The CGT union believes that Sete has overestimated future audience figures while underestimating operating costs.

The tower attracts around seven million visitors annually, according to the tower's website. However, according to the CGT, the tower's management bases its budget on 7.4 million visitors per year, a level that the union says has never been reached.
