German airline Lufthansa's purchase of a large part of Italian Ita Airways has now been completed. Lufthansa made a bid for the company in January two years ago, but after negotiations and reviews by the European Commission, the deal has only now been finalized.
Ita is a loss-making company, the successor to the defunct Alitalia.
Lufthansa is purchasing 41 percent of Ita Airways for the equivalent of approximately SEK 3.67 billion, with an option to purchase the rest of the company from the Italian state, starting as early as 2025.
