The Maldives is a leading global player in sustainability on the international stage as the world's lowest-lying country. Sustainable climate solutions are a high priority for the government and luxury hotels are working to implement sustainable measures.

With 1,192 coral islands, the Maldives is surrounded by world-famous reefs that are home to more than 2,000 marine species, including dolphins, turtles, stingrays and whale sharks. In total, the Maldives is home to five percent of the world's reefs and three UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.   

In recent years, the country has been actively working on climate change issues and has presented development plans for sustainability at the COP (Climate Change Conference of the Parties). The country is a leading advocate for SIDS (Small Island Developing States).

The Maldives aims to address climate change more proactively in the future, by preparing for extreme weather events and collaborating with other island nations. The ambition is to be a model of sustainability and to position tourism as economically viable in coexistence with the environment, culture and people.

Some examples of government initiatives
● Develop and launch an ecotourism project with a focus on sustainable tourism initiatives
● Design and implement a specific policy to find solutions to quickly complete semi-finished resort areas for economic sustainability in all regions of the Maldives.
● Develop and inaugurate a special ”Coastal Tourism” project for the town of Addu to promote local island tourism that provides economic sustainability for the town’s residents.
● Start a special program to increase the number of women employed in the tourism sector to ensure inclusion and gender equality.
