The virus continues to hit the world's air and holiday travel hard. More than 4,500 flights have been canceled worldwide over the holiday season, largely due to the omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, chaos continues in the air, with hundreds of flights delayed, according to the website Flightaware. On Friday, delays reached around 11,000, and the number of canceled departures amounted to around 2,400. On Saturday, another 2,300 flights were canceled.

Pilots, cabin crew and other staff have either called in sick or are in quarantine, forcing Lufthansa, Delta, United Airlines and many other airlines to cancel flights during one of the busiest travel holidays of the year.
