Despite pale economic outlooks, a surge of holidaymakers is expected at European airports this summer.
The three major low-cost airlines Ryanair, Easyjet, and Wizz Air have all pointed to early signs of strong summer demand, and indications of a strong desire for travel in Europe have also led other players to increase their capacity.
Between April and October, European airlines will have 817.5 million flight seats available, reports the Financial Times, citing figures from flight information company OAG. This is the highest figure ever recorded, the business newspaper further states.
At the same time, the price of a plane ticket has increased sharply since before the pandemic. According to EU data from October, this represents a price increase of 20–30 per cent between 2019 and 2023.
Europe's six largest airlines are expected to report adjusted operating profits of €10.5 billion for 2024, according to Factset, equivalent to SEK 119 billion. This compares to €9.2 billion last year.
