The data leak at the Marriott hotel company could cost $1 billion, estimates show.
According to the company's CFO Leeny Oberg, however, it is still too early to estimate the financial consequences of the leak.
Bloomberg Intelligence estimates that Marriott could face costs of up to $1 billion, including potential fines and the cost of notifying affected customers. Other companies that have suffered data breaches are not automatically good comparisons, however, according to Leeny Oberg, who admitted at a conference on Wednesday that the incident will likely entail significant costs.
A Senate committee has set a deadline for Marriott of December 17. By then, the company must report details of its investigation into the leak.
Late last week, Marriott announced that personal data for as many as 500 million customers of its subsidiary Starwood had been accessible to unauthorized parties for a long time.
