Nearly 2,000 employees in the hotel and restaurant industry in Norway are going on strike. Over 100 hotels and restaurants in Oslo and Bergen are affected, including IKEA's restaurants.

Negotiations between trade unions and employers broke down overnight into Sunday. The dispute is not solely about wages, but also about conditions for sickness benefits.

”Hotel and restaurant employees have some of the country's lowest wages, but they have the same expenses for food and rent as everyone else. Without a real wage increase offer, we see no other option but strike,” says Dag-Einar Sivertsen, chief negotiator for the trade union Fellesforbundet.

The strike breaks out at lunchtime on Sunday, but as early as Thursday, it could be escalated by another 1,000 people.
